Course Overview

This course is designed to equip staff with the skills, techniques, and mindset necessary to become effective peer mentors and supportive colleagues within their workplace. By fostering a collaborative and positive work environment, peer mentors can help colleagues navigate challenges, develop professionally, and build confidence. This course covers the fundamentals of peer mentoring, including active listening, goal setting, providing constructive feedback, and maintaining professional boundaries. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants will learn how to provide meaningful support to their peers, enhancing team morale and contributing to a more supportive workplace culture.

    • Role of a Peer Mentor: Understanding the purpose, benefits, and boundaries of peer mentoring, along with the mentor’s role in fostering a collaborative environment.

    • Skills and Attributes of an Effective Mentor: Identifying the qualities that make a great mentor, such as empathy, patience, objectivity, and encouragement.

    • Benefits of Peer Mentorship: Exploring how peer mentoring contributes to individual growth, team cohesion, and a supportive workplace culture.

  2. Building Trust and Rapport with Colleagues

    • Establishing a Safe Space: Techniques for creating an environment of psychological safety where colleagues feel comfortable discussing challenges and seeking support.

    • Effective Communication for Building Trust: Practicing active listening, open-ended questioning, and empathy to establish rapport with mentees.

    • Encouraging Self-Reflection and Accountability: Strategies for guiding colleagues to reflect on their own progress, take ownership of their growth, and build confidence in their capabilities.

  4. Giving Constructive Feedback and Encouragement

    • Effective Feedback Techniques: Methods for delivering constructive, actionable feedback in a positive and supportive manner.

    • Balanced Feedback Models: Learning frameworks like the “Feedback Sandwich” or “SBI (Situation-Behavior-Impact) Model” to ensure feedback is clear, respectful, and beneficial.

    • Recognizing and Reinforcing Strengths: Techniques for encouraging colleagues by recognizing their strengths and celebrating their achievements, fostering motivation and self-esteem.

  5. Supporting Colleagues through Challenges

    • Identifying Signs of Struggle: Recognizing common indicators that a colleague may need additional support, including changes in behavior, engagement, or morale.

    • Providing Emotional Support: Techniques for supporting colleagues during challenging times, including active listening, empathy, and reframing strategies.

    • Encouraging Professional Resources: Knowing when to recommend additional resources, such as HR support, professional counseling, or training, to help colleagues overcome specific challenges.

    • Promoting Peer Mentoring within the Team: Strategies for encouraging a culture where everyone is empowered to offer and receive support, fostering a team-oriented environment.

Course Format: This interactive workshop combines lectures, group discussions, role-playing exercises, and case studies to provide a hands-on learning experience.
